Periodontology is a branch of dentistry dealing with the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases and oral mucosa. The causes of this problem are complex. The main cause is poor oral hygiene – or lack of it therof. This creates bacterial plaque and, if not removed, it mineralises and forms tartar, the bacteria over time initiating an inflammatory process that leads to the slow destruction of the tissues around the tooth, followed by lesions involving the bone and periodontal ligaments. Other causes can be improperly placed fillings, old, compressive dentures, leaking crowns or bridges, smoking, stress, diabetes, hormonal disorders, inadequate diet low in vitamins.
Periodontitis develops mainly due to excessive accumulation of tartar. This tartar collects in the spaces between the gums and teeth, causing inflammation. Without proper treatment, this can result in receding gums, bleeding, tissue loss, sensitivity and even loosening of teeth. Excessive bacterial proliferation can also cause bad breath. In extreme situations, periodontitis can even lead to complete tooth loss. Fortunately, there are effective ways to avoid this problem.
The simplest and most effective method of preventing periodontitis is regular oral check-ups (every six months in adults and every three in children).
